The tower and the well installation represents an attempt to reconnect with a past memory of a specific place in the Sardinia of the 1970s.

Real working objects such as a fisherman’s viewing tower or reed boat are separated from their natural environment and theatrically re-contextualised as museum pieces or ‘heritage’ artefacts in the gallery.

The use of new technology – ‘clean’ digital animations – creates a dissonant, artificial, cinematic effect, pointing to the impossibility of an authentic connection with the past.

Fragile line drawings mapping the landscape of 'the tower and the well' cross the gallery walls and are projected onto the floor, suggesting further the sense of the fleeting and the ephemeral.

Gaia Persico completed her MA in Painting at Wimbledon School of Art. Her work is currently on display in Rotate at the Contemporary Art Society. She is the winner of this year’s Re:drawing competition at Oriel Davies, and will have a solo exhibition there in 2009.

Past shows include Isobar (curator, Fieldgate Gallery), Concrete Dreams (APT), Blink (Gasworks), Paint (fa projects), PILOT:2 and East International 2002 (Norwich Gallery).

Gaia Persico lives and works in London and Wrexham.

The tower and the well is kindly supported by Corbula, Sardinia, and The Italian Cultural Institute in London.
