An exhibition of paintings by Gavin Maughfling inspired by a journey to the vast and empty landscapes of Northern Arizona and Utah.
Maughfling's paintings originate in webcam stills taken from locations scattered across the North American continent from Arizona to Alaska.
The artist uses the language of landscape to create metaphors for states of mind and being. These paintings explore emotions like daydreaming, wanderlust, absence, unreality and desire.
The paintings develop a recurring concern in Maughfling's work with the psychological potential of pictorial space. Their epic scale and handling refer to the tradition of the sublime in American landscape painting.
