Stunning large-scale photographic portraits based on a selection of well-known paintings from the canon of art history.

In these carefully staged reproductions of iconic paintings from the 16th through to the 20th century, Victoria Hall plays the role of the female figure in order to explore portraiture and the social changes in the presentation of personal image.

These works exploit the specific language, texture and accessibility of photographic reality and make reference to the modern creation and consumption of ‘history’ through period drama and the heritage industry’s exploitation of this genre.

Each portrait is printed to the size of the original canvases, and includes a restaging of Hockney’s ‘Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy’, currently in Radio 4’s top ten British paintings competition.

Victoria Hall completed her MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design. Recent shows include Lost and Found in Translation at Newlyn Art Gallery and Spoilt Rotten at Oriel Davies Gallery in Wales.

Portrayal is part of the photomonth season in London’s East End and the City.
