Ten painters focus on ordinary everyday aspects of our urban and suburban landscape, and make something special from material that at first sight might seem singularly unpromising.
The show points up the way our built environment can seem ghostly, dislocated, threatening, exotic, a place of dreams and heightened awareness, where reality and fantasy intermingle.
The show also addresses the question of style – how the look of our environment influences the way we interpret it, how style relates to subject matter in painting, and how the style and content of a painting are in most cases indivisible.
