D J Robert’s work is autobiographical and relates to his interest in, among other things, writing, popular culture and the ordinary, everyday world in which most of us live.
A recent project involved an installation of 16 paintings recreating a hitch-hike he did as a student. The music he listened to, the clothes he wore, the banal but retrospectively emotion-charged scenes he saw from the road, the club he met his friends in, are all recorded from memory.
Other works reference the way British suburbia can, at different times and in different conditions, appear exotic, alien or threatening. Roberts believes that the influence of film is very much responsible for this.
